This post is dedicated to Maria. A small but heartfelt way of honoring a truly special friend.
When I first met Maria, I never imagined what our friendship would become. It’s rare in life to find a connection that grows this deeply, but I was lucky enough to find that with her. Today Maria turns 70, and I find myself reflecting on the day we met fifteen years ago in the busy halls of the hospital. So many people pass through those hallways, but Maria was never just a passing moment. You feel seen when you are with her, she makes everyone she meets feel special and important.
Over the years, Maria has been a steady light in my life, from my career into retirement. Always encouraging, always positive, always lifting me up exactly when I needed it most. Her kindness reaches far beyond friendship and flows into every corner of our lives. She recenty spent time with my daughter sharing her love of French wines. She can sit with my husband and talk politics or sports...she never misses a beat and he enjoys every minute of her company. She meets people where they are at and always leaves them better
And it is in the garden where our friendship truly took root. We share a love of gardening and a deep love for our mothers, and those simple, meaningful things became the thread that held us close long after we no longer worked side by side. Her garden reflects who she is. It is full, vibrant, generous...especially in the spring, her favorite season, when everything seems to come alive around her. Life is busy, and she is always moving, and for that reason I truly cherish every moment we get to spend together.
Maria is a devoted mother, and that love is something you feel immediately when she speaks of her son. Steady, proud, and full of grace, just like her. Her professional life is just as remarkable, and there is also an artistry to Maria that goes beyond titles. She plays the piano beautifully, and her love of music brings a richness to her life. She loves family and though her siblings are far away, they are very close.
There is so much I can say about Maria. Seventy years, and she lives each one with curiosity, joy, and a heart that continues to give. I often wish I could find a way to give back even a small measure of what she has given to me and to others, though it never quite feels like enough.
Maria, you have made so many lives brighter, especially mine. You have left lasting impressions in hearts everywhere you go, and I am grateful every single day to call you my friend. Your friendship is a gift to me, Paul, Jennifer and everyone that knows you. Happy 70th birthday!! We wish you every happiness always.
