The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is the official flower of California and April 6th is designated as California Poppy Day. I have many memories of poppies so I just had to grow them in P & B's Garden. One of my favorite childhood movies to watch with my Aunt Pat was the Wizard of Oz and I loved the part when Dorothy fell asleep in a poppy field. I remember my Dad always had a poppy on his rear view mirror in honor of Veterans Day in Chicago and my favorite poppy memory was of Jennifer and I visiting the poppy fields in San Diego several years ago. The garden center said that poppies do well in Texas and will come back each year. They are early spring bloomers and I planted mine under our oak tree where they will get lots of sun before the spring leaves come back overhead. Here are some of my poppies this year.
Happy California Poppy Day !!
